PROGRAMS AND SERVICES

Residents of Lee County have many services available to them and their families from the LEE COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT. These services include, but are not limited to the following:

- ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SERVICES -

Food Program: Retail Food Establishments are permitted/licensed and inspected at routine intervals. Each establishment is evaluated for cleanliness, proper food handling and food storage practices. Reinspections are conducted as needed in an effort to verify an establishment's correction of problem areas. Community education is available to improve food handling practices and to address areas of concern. Fees are required for permits and licenses.

Private Sewage Program: Permits are issued and inspections are conducted of private sewage disposal systems installed in Lee County. All systems must be installed in accordance with specific Lee County Codes and Rules and Regulations. Fees are required for permits.

Private Well Program: Permits are issued on all new wells which are installed in Lee County. All systems must be installed in accordance with specific Lee County Codes and Rules and Regulations. Fees are required for permits.

Nuisance Program: All nuisance complaints are investigated or forwarded to the appropriate agency for action.

- NUTRITION SERVICES -

WIC (Women, Infants, And Children) Program: WIC is a Supplemental Nutrition Program which provides nutrition education and specific nutritional foods that are tailored to meet the needs of Pregnant, Breast-feeding, and Post Partum women; infants up to 1 year; and children 1 to 5 years old. WIC participants must meet the program requirements of residency, income, and nutritional risk.

- MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH SERVICES -

Healthy Moms/Healthy Kids Program: Case management services are provided at no cost to pregnant women and children under the age of three who meet specific income guidelines. An assessment of needs, referrals to service providers, follow-up, education and home visits are provided.

Family Planning Program: Services are available on a "sliding fee for service" basis. On-site clinics are held to provide women with annual reproductive examinations. Reproductive and contraceptive counseling and choice of contraceptive methods are available. Follow-up laboratory reports and type of contraception is provided according to individual need. Basic infertility services and referral is also provided to persons trying to achieve pregnancy.

High Risk Infant Follow-up Program: Infants referred through APORS (Adverse Pregnancy Outcome Reporting System) are provided with home visits on a periodic basis. A physical and developmental assessment is completed. Referrals to other service providers are also made.

Hearing And Vision Screening Program: Hearing and vision screenings are provided to children in Lee County Schools in mandated grades and in Lee County Preschools. Children ages 3 and older who need vision and hearing screening and are not in mandated school grades or preschools may make an appointment at Lee County Health Department.

Toddler Seat Program: Car seats are available for purchase or temporary rental for children who weigh 20 pounds to 40 pounds. For more information call Lee County Health Department.

- CHRONIC DISEASE SERVICES -

Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Program: Free blood pressure screenings are held monthly in different locations throughout Lee County. Smoking cessation education and counseling are provided to pregnant women enrolled in WIC and HM/HK.

Flu (Influenza) Program: Annual clinics are held in the fall. High Risk persons with chronic diseases and persons over age 60 are encouraged to participate.

Home Health Program: Limited services are available to persons with chronic diseases. A physician's referral is necessary.

Prevention Initiative Program: Provides nutrition education to reduce iron deficiency, prevent baby bottle tooth decay, increase breastfeeding, make nutritious food selections and provide nutrition education in schools.

- COMMUNICABLE DISEASE SERVICES -

Immunization Program: Immunization clinics are held two to four days per week (by appointment only). Immunizations include DTP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis), OPV (Oral Polio Vaccine), MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella), Hib (Haemophilus influenza type b), Td (Tetanus, Diphtheria), and Hepatitis B (limited to certain age groups). Call for information on fees. Medicaid is accepted. A physician referral is required for participation for infants and children up to age two.

Communicable Disease Investigation Program: Investigations, patient education and limited follow-up tests are provided. Information is also provided on international travel.

STD (Sexually Transmitted Disease) Program: Education, testing and treatment, and contact tracing are provided for specific STD's as outlined by the Center for Disease Control.

AIDS Program: Anonymous counseling, testing of high risk persons, tracing, education and support are provided.

Tuberculosis Program: Skin testing (by appointment), follow-up, X-rays, laboratory tests, and medication are provided if medically indicated.

- MENTAL HEALTH AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES -

The Lee County Health Department provides no direct services in Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities. The Board of Health, however; does provide supplemental funding of these services for Lee County residents through Sinnissippi Mental Health Center and through the Kreider Rehabilitation Center.
