The Government Dam on the Rock River between Sterling and Rock Falls began shortly after funds were appropriated by Congress in 1890. The dam was built to divert water from the Rock River into the Hennepin Feeder Canal. This photo depicts a view of the dam from the Rock Falls side of the river, possibly taken around 1906 as Sterling side is not quite finished. Grand Opening festivities were held October 24, 1907.
