The Government Dam nearing completion on the Sterling side; the river opened to traffic in late 1907. The purpose of the large construction area, dug below bed rock supporting the dam, is unclear; perhaps to provide an adequate base for the pump house? Interesting enough is the fact that the Dillon home and carriage house is located on property above the square drainage culvert. Be sure to visit SRFHS to learn more about the Government Dam and the Hennepin Canal project.
