Lt. Eugene Ely, of Davenport, Iowa, was the first man to fly a plane from the deck of a ship; a small flight deck was built on the S.S. Birmingham. It is reported he may also have been the first to land an airplane in the Sterling-Rock Falls area as shown in this August, 1910 photograph. ![]() |
